At a size of just 11.79 square miles, Royal Oak is a popular and active city. The culture, shops, and nightlife attracts people from all over south eastern Michigan. A fun fact about Royal Oak is its name's origin. In 1819, Territorial Governor Lewis Cass came across a large oak tree during one of his surveying expeditions. The tree, which is located near present-day intersection of Rochester Road, Crooks Road, and Main Street, reminded Lewis Cass of the Royal Oak tree to which King Charles II hid inside of inorder to escape the capture from the Roundheads after the battle of Worcester. He thought it fitting to name the new territory/city after that tree.

Royal Oak is east of Berkley and Huntington Woods, west of Madison Heights, and just north of the I-696 freeway. The population is estimated to be 58,946 (according to the US 2013 census). The Royal Oak residents are in the boundary of the Royal Oak School District. You name it, Royal Oak has it. Awesome schools, fantastic shopping, a fun nightlife environment, beautiful parks, and much more. If you're considering Royal Oak being the city that you're going to live in, you won't be disappointed.
